Stealth is where Thief works best. It’s tough but fair, and gives you breathing room to avoid detection when you keep to the shadows.
Thief has had its less glamorous moments, too. It has been an intellectual property languishing at the bottom of a drawer, awaiting the day when the market reports come in and the market reports say we need Assassin’s Creed.
Such is the turbulent nature of Thief, a clunky, intriguing, slapdash, atmospheric stealth game that leashes you to its inconsistencies and gives you no choice but to submit to its whims.
There are naturally going to be direct comparisons to Dishonored with Thief, but it has a decidedly different feel to it. For starters, the main character, Garrett, talks and has a personality.
After a decade away, the Thief series’ hero Garrett has returned to steal from a sickly city. This time around, he’s joined by an accomplice named Erin, but their partnership is cut short when a routine mission to steal an artifact called the primal stone goes south.
While it's possible to play Thief on the offensive, knocking out security guards by dropping chandeliers onto their heads with a well-aimed arrow or choking them from behind, this is a game that rewards uncompromising stealth.
But despite a manifest lack of polish, Thief is nevertheless a striking-looking game and one that succeeds in capturing the spirit of its predecessors, with just one small caveat: you’ll need to disable Focus, Eidos Montreal’s headline feature.
This version of Thief covets the satisfaction of an object well stolen, and brings its trim hero to life in a way that the original games never quite touched on.

Thief manages some moments of brilliance – botching a near-perfect pick-pocketing manoeuvre only to be rumbled by upsetting a nearby vase is a personal highlight; likewise diving into a cupboard just in time for a cook to peek inside the cupboard next to me – and asserts its own identity.
And as a thief, you need something worth stealing. In the most satisfying circumstances, you learn of a rare treasure by surreptitiously reading a document or overhearing a conversation, then test your powers of observation to ferret out its secret location.
I encourage you to play Thief in the dark as this simple light surprisingly adds a great deal to the game.
Speaking of, while it makes sense that a Thief would only work at night, the darkness that permeates the entire game doesn't help to create a noticeable mix of settings.
On that note, Thief features an innovative custom difficulty reminiscent of the skulls in Halo and the assist toggling in Forza Motorsport.

Thief plays like a game that had an exceptionally painful birth. To be perfectly blunt, it feels like three different games that were stapled together in a fat hurry, as a last-ditch effort to stop the game from being canceled outright.
Worst of all, Thief spends far too much time trying to be something other than a stealth game and failing spectacularly.
Unfortunately, even played the "right" way, Thief often falls short of its developers' lofty intentions. For all the freedom it offers, it ultimately amounts to a fairly standard and one-dimensional take on the stealth genre.
Simply called Thief this time around, this new game acknowledges that gap in time, reflecting some of the evolutions in game design that have occurred over almost two console hardware generations.
I can't imagine a Thief game without him, and thankfully Eidos Montreal get him right. He takes pride in being the best at what he does but doesn't brag. He kills when he has to but prefers not to.
